The YCL is structured as a democratic centralist organization.
Most of our work occurs in three commissions:
Mass Work, Education, and Social Membership.
Th commission is the home of the on-the-ground political work of the YCL.
The focus of this commission is dedicated to 2 campaigns:
Rent Control
We are members of the Philadelphia Rent Control Coalition, whose long-term goal is to pass rent control legislation in the city of Philadelphia.
In order to achieve this goal, we are engaging in a Data Project to visualize census data on rent burden across the city. The project will provide data to build a public narrative for rent control, strengthen political education in our communities, and pressure council members to see it as a viable solution.
Electoral
Philadelphia’s role in a purple state makes electoral work essential for growing the working class’ base and advancing a long-term vision for justice.
Focus areas:
-Support progressive candidates in PA’s 3rd Congressional District.
-Support progressive candidates for the PA House and Senate.
-Begin building a strategy for the 2027 mayoral and city council elections.
The function of the Education commission is to build the knowledge and skill set of our members, and to bring a Marxist-Leninist perspective to the community that we organize alongside.
This is put into practice through monthly educationals that offer YCL members and the public opportunities to learn new skills, engage in book talks with special guests, explore passages from Marxist literature, and more.
The social membership commission’s focus is to recruit new members and to ensure our members are integrated into the political and social life of the YCL. This helps to strengthen our internal community and models a society that we want to create.
All recruitment and onboarding work is delegated through the Social Membership Commission.
The commission also plans all internal and external social events, including Marxist Movie Mondays, a monthly movie screening program that is hosted at and raises money for the DuBois Robeson People’s Center (DRPC).
